Ten fan zones to operate in Belarus during 2nd European Games Minsk 2019

Ten fan zones will be open in Belarus during the 2nd European Games Minsk 2019, including three in Minsk and seven in the regions, BelTA learned from Olga Grigoryeva, Head of the Cultural Program Organization Department of the Minsk European Games Organizing Committee (MEGOC), at a press conference on 11 March.

Olga Grigoryeva described the 2nd European Games as a captivating competition as well as a unique opportunity for Belarus to show its riches, culture, and traditions. The Minsk European Games Organizing Committee, the Culture Ministry, the Minsk City Executive Committee are busy preparing a program of events, which will take place in cultural and educational institutions.

The opening and closing ceremonies of the 2nd European Games Minsk 2019 represent some of the most important cultural events. The organizers are busy preparing a unique show for Belarus. “Never before has our country seen such a massive show. All the spectators, who come to the stadium to watch the ceremony, will also participate in an interactive component, which will not be part of the televised version,” the official noted.

The cultural program will include events in the fan zones. The main fan zone near the Sport Palace will open on 19 June. It will have public catering outlets, outlets to sell 2nd European Games merchandise, an arts and crafts fair, and presentation sites for oblasts of Belarus. Fan zones will also be located near Minsk Arena and Chizhovka Arena and in the regions. They will start working on 21 June. “Fan zones are urban celebration places with a big screen, sound and light where spectators, fans, and tourists will be able to get together and watch the most interesting events of the European Games from various sport venues and get into the spirit of celebration. In the evening a fan zone will be used as a concert and entertainment venue featuring days of culture of European participating states,” the official said.

Apart from that, official and unofficial ceremonies to award athletes will take part in the fan zones. Performances by popular artists and regional music bands, who will be able to demonstrate Belarus’ national zest, will be part of the program. Foreign guests will be treated to contests, surprises, games, and other kinds of activities from sponsors and partners of the games.

“Every fan zone will have its own format – a national one, a sport one, a youth one, or a family one. There will be a lot of entertainment. Plans have been made to arrange exhibition performances in sports, which do not belong to the main program. Close attention will be paid to exhibition performances in historical fencing in the Upper City on 22-23 June. The Mikhail Savitsky Art Gallery will put on display unique valuable ancient swords, masks. The exposition will be open from late April till early September,” Olga Grigoryeva said.
