Mogilev History Museum offers virtual city history tour

The Mogilev History Museum offers a virtual tour of the exposition “Mogilev of the time of the Magdeburg rights”, BelTA learned from the museum.

“Senior researcher of the museum Yelena Marzalyuk will tell online visitors about the most interesting stages of Mogilev’s development, from the ancient times to the end of the 19th century. The video provides information about Mogilev’s first town hall, about events that took place in its territory when it was part of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, and about its residents – what they believed in, what they did for a living, what they wore,” the museum noted.

The tour focuses on the golden age of Mogilev’s cultural life when it was one of the largest and most influential cultural centers in Eastern Europe – the 16th-18th centuries. Since 1577, the city had the right to self-government and enjoyed equal rights with the capital of the country, Vilna.

Yelena Marzalyuk will also speak about one of the most valuable items of the museum – Belarus’ only copy of the 1588 Statute of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania which was bought thanks to donations from sponsors and citizens. The document is the greatest achievement of the old Belarusian legal thought and a predecessor of European constitutions and the most progressive state code in the Europe of that time.

The video tour ends with a visit to the Mogilev Town Hall crowned by a unique mechanical clock made by local artisan Gennady Golovchik. The hand of one of its clock faces makes one turn per 500 years. The clockmaker himself will show his inventions.

“Such virtual tours are very trendy at this time. Our online visitors now have an opportunity to get familiar with the history of Mogilev and support the museum that continues working despite all difficulties,” the museum added. It launched a crowdfunding campaign on the MolaMola website to support its activities. One can donate any sum to the museum via the website.
