CIS chief praises Tajikistan’s chairmanship at CIS

Tajikistan’s chairmanship at the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) in 2018 was successful and fruitful, Chairman of the CIS Executive Committee, CIS Executive Secretary Sergei Lebedev told the media ahead of the meeting of the Council of Permanent Plenipotentiary Representatives of the CIS member states in the CIS charter bodies at the CIS headquarters in Minsk, BelTA has learned. “Tajikistan’s chairmanship was acclaimed at the meeting of the presidents of the CIS states in Dushanbe on 28 September and at the meeting of the heads of government in Astana on 2 November. Everyone acknowledged great organization and conduct of forums, meetings, sessions and conferences that were held in Tajikistan and in other CIS states under the presidency of Tajikistan,” Sergei Lebedev said. Tajikistan’s Permanent Plenipotentiary Representative to the CIS charter bodies, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Tajikistan to the Republic of Belarus Mahmadsharif Khakdod noted that the major result of Tajikistan’s chairmanship at the organization was ramping up cooperation across all the areas. “The focus was made on strengthening security across the CIS. Other areas of focus included trade and economic cooperation, power engineering, transport, communications, including free movement of goods, services, and capital and naturally cultural and humanitarian cooperation,” he said. Mahmadsharif Khakdod added that another important area of focus is cooperation with the United Nations. “On 26 November this year, during the 73rd session, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution on cooperation between the United Nations Organization and the Commonwealth of Independent States. This resolution was initiated and drafted by Tajikistan with participation of other CIS member states,” he emphasized.
